A handful of pages organise themselves. A few hundred don’t. None of what follows is needed to start — reach for it when the wiki gets big enough to need it.
Page names and addresses edit
A page’s name is its web address: “Getting started” lives at /getting-started. You can group related pages with a slash in the name — help/editing and help/formatting sit together under help, much like folders. (That’s exactly how the pages in this Help section are arranged.)
Categories edit
Categories group pages by topic so readers can browse by subject. Add a page to one or more categories in its settings and it shows up as a chip at the foot of the page; clicking a category lists everything in it. Categories can be combined, nested inside broader ones, and kept separate from housekeeping labels like “draft” or “needs sources.”
The home page edit
Your front page is just another page, named index. Edit it like any other to set the tone — a welcome, a few key links, a sense of what the wiki is for.
Renaming and moving edit
Renaming a page is a single action: pick the new name and the page moves, history and all. A gentle pointer is left at the old address so existing links still work — a redirect. You can also point one page at another on purpose, which is handy for alternate names of the same topic.
Merging and splitting edit
As a wiki grows you sometimes need to reshape it:
- Merge folds one page into another and leaves a redirect behind, turning two overlapping pages into one.
- Split carves a section out of a long page into a page of its own.
Both keep the full history intact.
Multiple languages edit
A page can exist in several languages as separate, linked pages, with a language bar for readers and an offer to start any that’s missing. Turn languages on in Customize.
Finding things to fix edit
You don’t have to hunt for loose ends by hand. Wikigit’s special pages surface them automatically — pages nothing links to, links to pages that don’t exist yet, dead ends, and more. They make a useful to-do list as a wiki matures.
